What is Deep Pressure Touch?

What Is Deep Pressure & Why It Matters for Emotional Regulation

At its simplest, deep pressure is the calming, grounding sensation we feel when we’re hugged, squeezed, or gently held. Scientifically, it’s referred to as "firm tactile sensory input"—and it has profound effects on the body, brain and nervous system.

For individuals with SEND, autism, sensory processing differences, or emotional regulation needs, deep pressure can be incredibly supportive. It acts like a reset button for a dysregulated nervous system, offering comfort, calm and connection.

So, what exactly is deep pressure?

The official definition is “the sensation produced when an individual is hugged, squeezed, stroked, or held.” But in practice, it’s so much more than just physical touch. Deep pressure affects the parasympathetic nervous system—our rest and digest system—helping to reduce anxiety, promote focus, and improve mood.

Our Deep Pressure Programme

Recognising the importance of this powerful technique, we created a structured Deep Pressure Programme that delivers these benefits safely and effectively. Designed with care for those with autism, complex sensory needs, and emotional regulation challenges, the programme draws on techniques from:

  • Therapeutic massage

  • Somatosensory activities (which stimulate the body’s sense of touch, pressure and movement)

Every part of the programme is informed by evidence-based practice, experience in special education, and a deep understanding of how the body and mind respond to nurturing touch.

Why it works

Deep pressure helps regulate the sensory system and encourages feelings of safety and security. When integrated into daily routines, it can help:

  • Reduce anxiety and distress

  • Improve sleep and emotional wellbeing

  • Support engagement in learning and play

  • Decrease sensory overload, overwhelm and crisis

Whether you’re a parent, carer, or professional, our programme equips you with the tools to support regulation in a gentle, respectful way.
